  "content_text": "On the pads.\n\nVertical,\\\n\nreclined,\n\nwith two canines.\n\nThe iPad mini\\\n\npelting out\\\n\nsome tinny metal\\\n\nfrom the glass,\n\nand me\n\nall thumbs\\\n\nin the phone.\n\nA few twelve-hour days\\\n\nstill humming through the chassis.\n\nNo workstation.\n\nNo grand apparatus.\n\nJust the little domestic cockpit\\\n\nat the end of the day,\n\neverything running\\\n\non residual charge.\n\nPeripheral,\n\nmy left ear\\\n\npicks up a dog\n\nlicking\\\n\nher irritated paw.\n\nWet little repetition.\n\nLick.\\\n\nLick.\\\n\nLick.\n\nUntil something else\\\n\nenters the field.\n\nShe moves up to command.\n\nNose on the mantle.\n\nNose in the shades.\n\nInspecting\\\n\nwhatever invisible intelligence\\\n\nhas gathered there.\n\nShe gruffs.\n\nOnce.\n\nA complete statement.\n\nThen collapses again.\n\nAssessment concluded.\n\nThe other one\\\n\nis inclined to tweak,\n\ngnawing away\\\n\nwith those little hamster teeth,\n\nsome microscopic\\\n\ncanine maintenance,\n\nuntil she too\\\n\nchills out.\n\nAnd now\n\nall I get\n\nis a tickle of breath\\\n\nin my ear.\n\nThe smallest signal\\\n\nhas become\\\n\nthe closest one.\n\nMetal still leaking\\\n\nfrom the glass.\n\nMaybe this song\\\n\nis on repeat.\n\nI don't know.\n\nAt some point\\\n\nthe song stopped being a song\n\nand became part\\\n\nof the machinery.\n\nIt keeps going\\\n\nbecause it can.\n\nThe dogs sleep\\\n\nbecause they can.\n\nI lie here\\\n\nsomewhere between them,\n\nstill glowing,\n\nstill scrolling,\n\nneck crinked,\n\nhands holding\\\n\none last rectangle\\\n\nof civilization.\n\nMe,\n\nmy metal,\n\nand comrades.\n\nAll in slumber\n\nwhile the world burns.\n\nNot peace exactly.\n\nA small defended patch\\\n\nof it.\n\nBeyond the walls\n\nthe enormous machinery\\\n\nkeeps turning.\n\nTraffic.\n\nFeeds.\n\nSirens.\n\nMarkets.\n\nWars.\n\nEverybody insisting\\\n\nupon the emergency.\n\nBut here\n\nwarm breath.\n\nSleeping dogs.\n\nTired thumbs.\n\nGuitars\\\n\nthrough inadequate speakers.\n\nLithium.\n\nGlass.\n\nFlesh.\n\nSteel.\n\nA nervous system\\\n\nslowly relinquishing\\\n\nthe day.\n\nJust us biologics\n\nand the machinery.\n\nSomewhere along the way\n\nwe built machines\\\n\nto keep singing\n\nafter we got tired.\n\nTonight\n\nthey do.\n\nWe lie beside them.\n\nAnd after a few\\\n\ntwelve-hour days,\n\nI think\n\nI'm ready\n\nfor a break\n\nor two.",
