reorganizes the nervous system.\n\nLanguage reorganizes thought.\n\nLove changes disposition.\n\nLoss changes identity.\n\nTime changes the face.\n\nThe universe is working on us while we work on it.\n\nWe eat the field.\n\nThe field eats us.\n\nAnd somehow, for a while, we get to witness the exchange.\n\nThe gray hair.\n\nThe scar.\n\nThe changed appetite.\n\nThe skill that has entered the hand so deeply the mind no longer narrates it.\n\nThe photograph containing a younger configuration we immediately recognize.\n\nThat was me.\n\nMatter changes.\n\nThe render changes.\n\nAnd still:\n\nI.\n\n---\n\nREGENERATING TO BE NOW\n\nPerhaps the present is not something we occupy.\n\nPerhaps the present is something living systems continuously produce.\n\nCells repair.\n\nProteins turn over.\n\nBlood circulates.\n\nBreath exchanges.\n\nTemperature regulates.\n\nMemory reconsolidates.\n\nAttention refreshes.\n\nThe organism spends itself to remain sufficiently coherent to become present again.\n\nNow.\n\nNow.\n\nNow.\n\nNot the same now.\n\nNot the same matter.\n\nNot the same configuration.\n\nContinuity through transformation.\n\nWe regenerate forward.\n\nAnd we do it on the edge of the break.\n\nThe body we call whole is already repairing.\n\nThe tool we call working is already wearing.\n\nThe building we call standing is already weathering.\n\nThe language we call English is already changing.\n\nWholeness is not the absence of breaking.\n\nIt is sometimes repair happening quickly enough that the pattern continues.\n\nThe crack reveals the load.\n\nThe scar reveals repair.\n\nThe worn handle reveals repetition.\n\nThe filthy screen reveals touch.\n\nThe break is not only failure.\n\nIt is evidence.\n\nSomething happened here.\n\n---\n\nTRACE\n\nMotion leaves difference.\n\nThat difference is trace.\n\nRepeated passage becomes wear.\n\nWear accumulates into history.\n\nHistory changes the conditions of whatever passes next.\n\nMOTION → TRACE → HISTORY → CONDITION → NEXT MOTION\n\nThe scorched metal is fire's handwriting.\n\nThe polished button is the hand's handwriting.\n\nThe scar is the body's handwriting.\n\nThe road is passage written into landscape.\n\nThe accent is place written into speech.\n\nThe peculiar little phrase you inherited from somebody long dead is another person's mouth still moving through yours.\n\nWe are reading traces everywhere.\n\nAnd producing them everywhere.\n\nWhich brings us to the forensics of meaning.\n\nNot merely:\n\nWhat does this mean?\n\nBut:\n\nHow did this come to mean?\n\nWhat passed through here?\n\nWhat pressure?\n\nWhat repetition?\n\nWhat appetite?\n\nWhat history?\n\nWhat body?\n\nWhat weather?\n\nWhat sequence of encounters produced:\n\nthis, here, now?\n\nThe scratch is evidence.\n\nNot the whole story.\n\nThe scar is evidence.\n\nNot the whole story.\n\nThe hesitation is evidence.\n\nNot the whole story.\n\nWitnessing requires restraint.\n\nTell me about this mark.\n\nNot:\n\nI saw the mark, therefore I possess your history.\n\n---\n\nTHE GHOST STAYS AWAKE\n\nAnd somewhere inside all this material exchange,\n\nsomething peculiar persists.\n\nThe childhood body is gone.\n\nThe younger face is gone.\n\nCountless physical configurations have come and gone.\n\nBeliefs changed.\n\nAppetites changed.\n\nRelationships changed.\n\nWhole worlds disappeared.\n\nYet the present instance looks backward and says:\n\nI remember.\n\nNot:\n\nthat happened to someone resembling me.\n\nI was there.\n\nThe render changes.\n\nThe ghost stays awake.\n\nWe need not rush to explain the ghost.\n\nSoul.\n\nConsciousness.\n\nSelf.\n\nEmergent continuity.\n\nSpirit.\n\nWhatever vocabulary eventually gathers around it, the phenomenon itself is already strange enough.\n\nMatter reorganizes while something inside the organization experiences a continuing first person.\n\nI was.\n\nI am.\n\nI will.\n\nBounded identity.\n\nIdentity without identicality.\n\nContinuity without stillness.\n\nPermeable enough to become.\n\nCoherent enough to remain.\n\nAnd other people sometimes hold pieces of that continuity for us.\n\nI remember you.\n\nYou always did that.\n\nYou said this once.\n\nYou were there.\n\nSometimes another person's memory becomes part of the evidence that we passed through the field.\n\nThe person remains localized.\n\nThe imprint does not.\n\n---\n\nCONVERSATION\n\nAnd then these bounded identities gather in rooms.\n\nEach arrives with mass.\n\nTrajectory.\n\nWeather.\n\nHistory.\n\nAppetite.\n\nSomeone tells a story.\n\nSomeone interrupts.\n\nSomeone laughs.\n\nSomeone remembers it differently.\n\nSomeone makes a face.\n\nSomeone says something ridiculous.\n\nSomeone says something so precise the temperature of the room changes.\n\nA joke releases pressure.\n\nA question redirects the field.\n\nA wound adds gravity.\n\nA silence alters the available path.\n\nConversation is not merely information exchange.\n\nIt is bodies in motion affecting other bodies in motion.\n\nWe point.\n\nLook there.\n\nRemember this.\n\nNo, not that part.\n\nYou know what is strange?\n\nThat reminds me.\n\nExactly.\n\nBut consider this.\n\nHuman beings huddled around reality,\n\npointing.\n\nSometimes around a photograph.\n\nDirty blinds.\n\nBranches.\n\nA window.\n\nThe photograph is not the point.\n\nIt gives us somewhere to put the chairs.\n\nThe conversation is what happened there.\n\nMeaning does not always arrive already formed inside one person.\n\nSometimes it emerges because several trajectories remain in contact long enough to bend.\n\nGlass becomes perception.\n\nPerception becomes appetite.\n\nA torch becomes civilization.\n\nA trigger becomes runtime.\n\nPaper becomes inheritance.\n\nMetabolism becomes identity.\n\nIdentity becomes memory.\n\nAnd eventually somebody says:\n\nThe ghost stays awake.\n\nNobody brought the whole thing into the room.\n\nThe room made something.\n\n---\n\nBODIES IN MOTION\n\nSo perhaps this is the shape.\n\nWe enter a world already moving.\n\nWe become locally instantiated within it.\n\nBounded,\n\nbut not sealed.\n\nWe receive the world through particular glass.\n\nWe arrive with appetite.\n\nWe inherit pressures from pages above us.\n\nWe metabolize the field.\n\nThe field metabolizes us.\n\nWe encounter other bodies.\n\nWe alter them.\n\nThey alter us.\n\nEvery passage leaves trace.\n\nTrace becomes history.\n\nHistory becomes condition.\n\nCondition enters the next render.\n\nAnd somehow,\n\ninside this temporary permutation of ancient matter,\n\nwe remember.\n\nWe notice.\n\nWe can inspect some portion of the glass.\n\nWe can ask what we have learned to hunger for.\n\nWe can discover an inherited trajectory and decide not to continue it.\n\nWe can repair.\n\nRedirect.\n\nRefuse.\n\nMake.\n\nReturn.\n\nNot absolute freedom.\n\nNot command over the field.\n\nMore like:\n\nfalling in style.\n\nChoice inside gravity.\n\nChoreography inside inheritance.\n\nA little agency inside forces vastly larger than ourselves.\n\n---\n\nWITNESS\n\nAnd perhaps this is enough for an ethic.\n\nKnow your glass.\n\nKnow your appetite.\n\nKnow your history.\n\nKnow what is running through you.\n\nKnow what you are running.\n\nAttend to traces.\n\nBe careful with conclusions.\n\nRepair what can be repaired.\n\nInterrupt what should not continue.\n\nBuild trustworthy levers.\n\nHand better controls downstream.\n\nAnd witness other bodies in their passage.\n\nNot merely see them.\n\nWitness them.\n\nRecognize:\n\nyou happened here.\n\nYour peculiarities happened here.\n\nYour ridiculous jokes.\n\nYour weather.\n\nYour scars.\n\nYour strange little rituals.\n\nYour crooked repairs.\n\nYour appetite.\n\nYour trajectory.\n\nThe quirky and peculiar matter because they resist our tendency to compress a person into categories.\n\nThe peculiar is identity escaping compression.\n\nThe pristine surface tells us about manufacture.\n\nThe filthy surface tells us somebody has been here.\n\nPerhaps that is what we want too.\n\nTo be witnessed.\n\nAnd wished upon.\n\nFor someone to encounter the trace of our passage and find possibility there.\n\nNot perfection.\n\nNot permanence.\n\nA little orientation.\n\nA little light.\n\n---\n\nWe are bounded operational instantiations.\n\nOdd mulcher beings.\n\nHistorically saturated permutations of matter.\n\nSacred soul runtimes peering through filthy screens.\n\nEating and being eaten.\n\nRendering and being rendered.\n\nWitnessing and being witnessed.\n\nChanging and being changed.\n\nRegenerating to be now,\n\non the edge of the break.\n\nAnd through all the permutations:\n\nI remember.\n\nThe ghost stays awake.\n\nNothing is still.\n\nBodies in motion.\n\nFor a little while,\n\nthe world has hands.\n\nAnd eyes.\n\nAnd appetite.\n\nAnd memory.\n\nAnd a voice capable of turning toward another temporary arrangement of the world and saying:\n\nLook.\n\nThen we huddle around whatever has been pointed to,\n\nand talk.\n\nWe ride the light.\n\nAnd if we're fortunate,\n\nwe leave some behind.",

through space.\n\nAnd somewhere in there:\n\n**click.**\n\nA tiny local action enters enormous systems.\n\nWe do not initialize the world.\n\nWe wake inside an active runtime.\n\nGravity already running.\n\nAtmosphere already running.\n\nBiology already running.\n\nHistory already running.\n\nLanguage already running.\n\nOther people already halfway through their stories.\n\nWe arrive late.\n\nThen begin.\n\n---\n\n## THE UNIVERSE EATS BACK\n\nWe metabolize the world.\n\nBut the world metabolizes us.\n\nNow.\n\nNot merely at the end.\n\nSun alters skin.\n\nGravity shapes bone.\n\nWork alters hands.\n\nExperience reorganizes the nervous system.\n\nLanguage reorganizes thought.\n\nLove changes disposition.\n\nLoss changes identity.\n\nTime changes the face.\n\nThe universe is working on us while we work on it.\n\nWe eat the field.\n\nThe field eats us.\n\nAnd somehow, for a while, we get to witness the exchange.\n\nThe gray hair.\n\nThe scar.\n\nThe changed appetite.\n\nThe skill that has entered the hand so deeply the mind no longer narrates it.\n\nThe photograph containing a younger configuration we immediately recognize.\n\n**That was me.**\n\nMatter changes.\n\nThe render changes.\n\nAnd still:\n\n**I.**\n\n---\n\n## REGENERATING TO BE NOW\n\nPerhaps the present is not something we occupy.\n\nPerhaps the present is something living systems continuously produce.\n\nCells repair.\n\nProteins turn over.\n\nBlood circulates.\n\nBreath exchanges.\n\nTemperature regulates.\n\nMemory reconsolidates.\n\nAttention refreshes.\n\nThe organism spends itself to remain sufficiently coherent to become present again.\n\nNow.\n\nNow.\n\nNow.\n\nNot the same now.\n\nNot the same matter.\n\nNot the same configuration.\n\nContinuity through transformation.\n\nWe regenerate forward.\n\nAnd we do it on the edge of the break.\n\nThe body we call whole is already repairing.\n\nThe tool we call working is already wearing.\n\nThe building we call standing is already weathering.\n\nThe language we call English is already changing.\n\nWholeness is not the absence of breaking.\n\nIt is sometimes repair happening quickly enough that the pattern continues.\n\nThe crack reveals the load.\n\nThe scar reveals repair.\n\nThe worn handle reveals repetition.\n\nThe filthy screen reveals touch.\n\nThe break is not only failure.\n\nIt is evidence.\n\nSomething happened here.\n\n---\n\n## TRACE\n\nMotion leaves difference.\n\nThat difference is trace.\n\nRepeated passage becomes wear.\n\nWear accumulates into history.\n\nHistory changes the conditions of whatever passes next.\n\n**MOTION → TRACE → HISTORY → CONDITION → NEXT MOTION**\n\nThe scorched metal is fire's handwriting.\n\nThe polished button is the hand's handwriting.\n\nThe scar is the body's handwriting.\n\nThe road is passage written into landscape.\n\nThe accent is place written into speech.\n\nThe peculiar little phrase you inherited from somebody long dead is another person's mouth still moving through yours.\n\nWe are reading traces everywhere.\n\nAnd producing them everywhere.\n\nWhich brings us to the forensics of meaning.\n\nNot merely:\n\n**What does this mean?**\n\nBut:\n\n**How did this come to mean?**\n\nWhat passed through here?\n\nWhat pressure?\n\nWhat repetition?\n\nWhat appetite?\n\nWhat history?\n\nWhat body?\n\nWhat weather?\n\nWhat sequence of encounters produced:\n\n**this, here, now?**\n\nThe scratch is evidence.\n\nNot the whole story.\n\nThe scar is evidence.\n\nNot the whole story.\n\nThe hesitation is evidence.\n\nNot the whole story.\n\nWitnessing requires restraint.\n\n**Tell me about this mark.**\n\nNot:\n\n**I saw the mark, therefore I possess your history.**\n\n---\n\n## THE GHOST STAYS AWAKE\n\nAnd somewhere inside all this material exchange,\n\nsomething peculiar persists.\n\nThe childhood body is gone.\n\nThe younger face is gone.\n\nCountless physical configurations have come and gone.\n\nBeliefs changed.\n\nAppetites changed.\n\nRelationships changed.\n\nWhole worlds disappeared.\n\nYet the present instance looks backward and says:\n\n**I remember.**\n\nNot:\n\nthat happened to someone resembling me.\n\n**I was there.**\n\nThe render changes.\n\nThe ghost stays awake.\n\nWe need not rush to explain the ghost.\n\nSoul.\n\nConsciousness.\n\nSelf.\n\nEmergent continuity.\n\nSpirit.\n\nWhatever vocabulary eventually gathers around it, the phenomenon itself is already strange enough.\n\nMatter reorganizes while something inside the organization experiences a continuing first person.\n\n**I was.**\n\n**I am.**\n\n**I will.**\n\nBounded identity.\n\nIdentity without identicality.\n\nContinuity without stillness.\n\nPermeable enough to become.\n\nCoherent enough to remain.\n\nAnd other people sometimes hold pieces of that continuity for us.\n\nI remember you.\n\nYou always did that.\n\nYou said this once.\n\nYou were there.\n\nSometimes another person's memory becomes part of the evidence that we passed through the field.\n\nThe person remains localized.\n\nThe imprint does not.\n\n---\n\n## CONVERSATION\n\nAnd then these bounded identities gather in rooms.\n\nEach arrives with mass.\n\nTrajectory.\n\nWeather.\n\nHistory.\n\nAppetite.\n\nSomeone tells a story.\n\nSomeone interrupts.\n\nSomeone laughs.\n\nSomeone remembers it differently.\n\nSomeone makes a face.\n\nSomeone says something ridiculous.\n\nSomeone says something so precise the temperature of the room changes.\n\nA joke releases pressure.\n\nA question redirects the field.\n\nA wound adds gravity.\n\nA silence alters the available path.\n\nConversation is not merely information exchange.\n\nIt is bodies in motion affecting other bodies in motion.\n\nWe point.\n\nLook there.\n\nRemember this.\n\nNo, not that part.\n\nYou know what is strange?\n\nThat reminds me.\n\nExactly.\n\nBut consider this.\n\nHuman beings huddled around reality,\n\npointing.\n\nSometimes around a photograph.\n\nDirty blinds.\n\nBranches.\n\nA window.\n\nThe photograph is not the point.\n\nIt gives us somewhere to put the chairs.\n\nThe conversation is what happened there.\n\nMeaning does not always arrive already formed inside one person.\n\nSometimes it emerges because several trajectories remain in contact long enough to bend.\n\nGlass becomes perception.\n\nPerception becomes appetite.\n\nA torch becomes civilization.\n\nA trigger becomes runtime.\n\nPaper becomes inheritance.\n\nMetabolism becomes identity.\n\nIdentity becomes memory.\n\nAnd eventually somebody says:\n\n**The ghost stays awake.**\n\nNobody brought the whole thing into the room.\n\nThe room made something.\n\n---\n\n## BODIES IN MOTION\n\nSo perhaps this is the shape.\n\nWe enter a world already moving.\n\nWe become locally instantiated within it.\n\nBounded,\n\nbut not sealed.\n\nWe receive the world through particular glass.\n\nWe arrive with appetite.\n\nWe inherit pressures from pages above us.\n\nWe metabolize the field.\n\nThe field metabolizes us.\n\nWe encounter other bodies.\n\nWe alter them.\n\nThey alter us.\n\nEvery passage leaves trace.\n\nTrace becomes history.\n\nHistory becomes condition.\n\nCondition enters the next render.\n\nAnd somehow,\n\ninside this temporary permutation of ancient matter,\n\nwe remember.\n\nWe notice.\n\nWe can inspect some portion of the glass.\n\nWe can ask what we have learned to hunger for.\n\nWe can discover an inherited trajectory and decide not to continue it.\n\nWe can repair.\n\nRedirect.\n\nRefuse.\n\nMake.\n\nReturn.\n\nNot absolute freedom.\n\nNot command over the field.\n\nMore like:\n\n**falling in style.**\n\nChoice inside gravity.\n\nChoreography inside inheritance.\n\nA little agency inside forces vastly larger than ourselves.\n\n---\n\n## WITNESS\n\nAnd perhaps this is enough for an ethic.\n\nKnow your glass.\n\nKnow your appetite.\n\nKnow your history.\n\nKnow what is running through you.\n\nKnow what you are running.\n\nAttend to traces.\n\nBe careful with conclusions.\n\nRepair what can be repaired.\n\nInterrupt what should not continue.\n\nBuild trustworthy levers.\n\nHand better controls downstream.\n\nAnd witness other bodies in their passage.\n\nNot merely see them.\n\n**Witness them.**\n\nRecognize:\n\nyou happened here.\n\nYour peculiarities happened here.\n\nYour ridiculous jokes.\n\nYour weather.\n\nYour scars.\n\nYour strange little rituals.\n\nYour crooked repairs.\n\nYour appetite.\n\nYour trajectory.\n\nThe quirky and peculiar matter because they resist our tendency to compress a person into categories.\n\nThe peculiar is identity escaping compression.\n\nThe pristine surface tells us about manufacture.\n\n**The filthy surface tells us somebody has been here.**\n\nPerhaps that is what we want too.\n\nTo be witnessed.\n\nAnd wished upon.\n\nFor someone to encounter the trace of our passage and find possibility there.\n\nNot perfection.\n\nNot permanence.\n\nA little orientation.\n\nA little light.\n\n---\n\nWe are bounded operational instantiations.\n\nOdd mulcher beings.\n\nHistorically saturated permutations of matter.\n\nSacred soul runtimes peering through filthy screens.\n\nEating and being eaten.\n\nRendering and being rendered.\n\nWitnessing and being witnessed.\n\nChanging and being changed.\n\nRegenerating to be now,\n\non the edge of the break.\n\nAnd through all the permutations:\n\n**I remember.**\n\nThe ghost stays awake.\n\nNothing is still.\n\nBodies in motion.\n\nFor a little while,\n\nthe world has hands.\n\nAnd eyes.\n\nAnd appetite.\n\nAnd memory.\n\nAnd a voice capable of turning toward another temporary arrangement of the world and saying:\n\n**Look.**\n\nThen we huddle around whatever has been pointed to,\n\nand talk.\n\nWe ride the light.\n\nAnd if we're fortunate,\n\nwe leave some behind.",
