# Honesty Settings

Honesty is not only a binary virtue.

It is also a setting:

**How much reality is this system presently capable of admitting without distorting, hiding, performing, or collapsing?**

That system might be a person.

A relationship.

A team.

An institution.

A story we have been telling for so long that we mistake its continuity for its truth.

The settings begin with questions.

What do I know?

What am I inferring?

What do I want to be true?

What am I afraid is true?

What am I omitting?

What am I performing?

What does my current posture make difficult to perceive?

What telemetry would change my mind?

What am I unwilling to concede?

What does the other party know that I cannot access?

What does the body know that parliament keeps overruling?

What does continuation require me to pretend?

And:

**How much truth can this relationship carry without breaking?**

Maximum disclosure is not necessarily maximum honesty.

Dumping every unprocessed impulse onto another person may only be discharge. Honest operation asks for accuracy, proportion, context, timing, ownership, and good faith.

There may be several settings inside the setting.

## Signal fidelity

Am I reporting what I actually perceive?

## Epistemic humility

Do I distinguish knowing from interpreting?

## Motive visibility

Can I admit what I want from this?

## Cost visibility

Am I showing who pays for my preferred outcome?

## Concession

Can incoming telemetry alter my account?

## Self-implication

Have I included myself in the system I am criticizing?

## Relational capacity

Can I tell the truth without unnecessarily destroying access?

## Reality contact

Am I managing what is, or defending the story I need?

Perfect truth is not available to us.

But maximum available candor about our actual position—with the consequence left attached—can change the state of a system.

The aim is not to turn honesty high enough to win.

**Set honesty high enough that the argument is allowed to change.**

High enough to update reality.
