  "content_text": "the body keeps \\\n\nthe oldest metronome,\n\ncarrying its little architecture \\\n\ntoward a horizon \\\n\nthat moves when we move.\n\nthis morning \\\n\nmy wife is somewhere westward, \\\n\nmy son needs carrying, \\\n\nwork waits behind permissions \\\n\nand passwords,\n\nand a puppy sleeps \\\n\nbeneath a blanket \\\n\nI pulled over her\n\nbecause I noticed.\n\nmaybe that is enough \\\n\nto begin with:\n\nI noticed.\n\nanother pair of eyes \\\n\nwas there too,\n\neven a puppy,\n\nanother nervous system \\\n\nunder power, \\\n\nanother aperture \\\n\ntaking in the morning,\n\nand for a little while \\\n\nthe world did not have \\\n\nto happen alone.\n\nI have been thinking \\\n\nabout buttons,\n\nhow such a small thing \\\n\ncan contain so much.\n\nfinger \\\n\nagainst surface,\n\nsurface against switch,\n\nswitch against current,\n\ncurrent against machine,\n\nmachine against network,\n\nnetwork against labor,\n\nmines, roads, servers, laws, \\\n\nwarehouses, hands,\n\nall waiting behind \\\n\na rectangle\n\nfor someone to press.\n\nthe button looks still\n\nbut under power \\\n\nit is connected \\\n\nto consequence.\n\nmaybe we are too.\n\nsoft buttons \\\n\nwalking around,\n\npressing against the field,\n\nsetting little chains \\\n\ninto motion\n\nwithout ever seeing \\\n\nhow far they travel.\n\na blanket pulled \\\n\nover a sleeping animal.\n\na ride given.\n\na door opened.\n\na word sent.\n\na hand held.\n\nsome tiny pressure \\\n\napplied at the right point\n\nand somewhere \\\n\nthe net moves.\n\nleverage.\n\nnot more force,\n\nbut force \\\n\nfinding relation.\n\ntranscend.\n\nnot leaving the world,\n\nbut climbing through \\\n\nwhat the world already gives us.\n\nand suddenly \\\n\neverything begins opening.\n\ncup becomes watershed.\n\nbutton becomes civilization.\n\nbody becomes lattice.\n\nwalk becomes passage.\n\neyes become witness.\n\nnothing changed.\n\nresolution did.\n\nit was always this dense.\n\nwe were just ignorant,\n\nmercifully compressing \\\n\nthe immeasurable\n\ninto\n\ndog \\\n\nwife \\\n\nson \\\n\nroad \\\n\nwork \\\n\nmorning\n\nso we could survive \\\n\nthe sheer abundance \\\n\nof what anything is.\n\nbut sometimes \\\n\nthe compression breaks\n\nand there it is:\n\nthe web.\n\nthe prospect of it.\n\nthe net.\n\neverything trembling \\\n\nthrough everything else.\n\nbone against gravity.\n\nlung against atmosphere.\n\nroot against soil.\n\nwheel against road.\n\nserver against grid.\n\nmoon against tide.\n\nmemory against now.\n\none life against another,\n\nnot colliding,\n\ntouching.\n\nand I wonder\n\ndoes life excite us anymore?\n\nnot the old excitement,\n\nperhaps,\n\nwhen the horizon seemed \\\n\nto contain something \\\n\nthat would finally arrive\n\nand explain us.\n\nsomething ahead.\n\nsomething next.\n\nsomething enormous.\n\nmaybe the enormous thing \\\n\nwas already here.\n\nmaybe we were standing \\\n\ninside it\n\nthe entire time.\n\nand now,\n\nas the body wanes,\n\nas the joints negotiate \\\n\nand the machinery complains,\n\nas gravity collects \\\n\nits little tax\n\nstep \\\n\nby \\\n\nstep,\n\nthe strange exchange occurs:\n\nthe apparatus weakens\n\nwhile the witness \\\n\ngains resolution.\n\nimmense interior.\n\nperishable apparatus.\n\nbone, collagen, fascia, nerve,\n\nthis improbable scaffold \\\n\nrepairing itself \\\n\nwhile occupied,\n\nholding a world\n\nuntil the lattice \\\n\ncan't hold no more.\n\nand perhaps \\\n\nthat is not the tragedy.\n\nperhaps the astonishment \\\n\nis that it held.\n\nthat matter gathered itself \\\n\ninto eyes\n\nand looked.\n\ngathered itself \\\n\ninto hands\n\nand covered the puppy.\n\ngathered itself \\\n\ninto lungs\n\nand barked at the moon.\n\now.\n\nowwwwww.\n\nmachines big and small,\n\nbiological, mechanical, \\\n\ncomputational, orbital,\n\nall humming inside \\\n\none another,\n\nall briefly coherent,\n\nall under power.\n\nso salute the horizon.\n\nnot because \\\n\nwe will reach it.\n\nthe horizon is only \\\n\nthe boundary generated \\\n\nby where we stand.\n\nmove\n\nand it moves.\n\nsalute it because \\\n\nit keeps asking us forward.\n\nI see the edge.\n\nI know \\\n\nI cannot keep it.\n\nI am coming anyway.\n\nbottle the lightning.\n\nride it.\n\nchase it by the tail.\n\nnotice something.\n\ntell someone.\n\ncarry someone.\n\ncover the creature.\n\nmake the thing.\n\nraise your temporary head \\\n\ntoward the ancient sky\n\nand transmit.\n\nstep\n\nstep\n\nstep\n\nwhile the lattice holds.",
